True to the Union is a 6,500-word, short historical-fiction with grit. While the Civil War raged, neighbor fought neighbor. In August 1862, Texas Confederate forces trapped and slaughtered 60 German immigrants attempting to flee to Mexico to avoid conscription into the Confederate Army. Near Ft. Worth, Confederate soldiers hold a "trial" and hang 40 Union supporters. In this hostile atmosphere, a German family in Comfort, Texas, decides to send their oldest son, Wilhelm, west to New Mexico and safety. Along the way, Wil aids a farmer whose wagon is stuck in a rough ford and afterwards, is offered supper and a place to sleep. The next morning, a Kiowa raiding party attacks forcing Wil to fight for his life while defending his new friends. Wil and the farm family prevail-all is right with the world-until a Confederate patrol arrives looking for fighting men to fill their conscription quota.
