The letter forwarded from the local federal law office in El Paso read: "All hell's fixin' to break loose up here. Sheriff's scairt to make a move. I ain't. I fit Injuns an' polecats before an' no bunch of masked tinhorn killers is gonna run me off my place. Send a man down to my place an' I'll tell him what I know. Don't let the sheriff in on it. He ain't worth a tinker's dam. Don't send no darn fool here either. I don't want to have to bury him. My place is on Copperhead Creek . . ."
