This audience, moreover, is indigenous to its earth and clime it belongs to the spot it inhabits, to the air it breathes; it has, like certain kinds of fruit and wine, a soil ?avor it is made up of people of whom our first thought is that they are gay, fashionable, and somewhat overdressed, but whom we presently discover to be also keen, shrewd and intelligent; of people evidently crit ical withal, who, if they are not very esthetic, have unerring common sense; who are in the main discriminating, who cannot be humbugged, and who will not be bored who are not over awed by great reputations, and who are apt to be rather iconoclastic in their tendencies, but who will, nevertheless, on occasion, submit to an amount of clap-trap that is almost incredible.
