Publisher's Synopsis

The Christian tradition is vast, and any selection from the treasure vaults of Christian literature is bound to be subjective. I took a non-denominational approach, and my criteria has been excellence. I looked for poems with artful craft, elevated imagination, profound meaning, and a sensitive marriage of sound and sense. Those poems from the Bible itself are from the Word of God, and the other poems are expressions of Christian faith. The aim here is to show the continuity of poetry, through more than three millennia, as an expression of faith in and love for God. Poems outside the Bible, though not the Word of God itself, have much to offer the believer, just as the thousands and thousands of sermons, hymns and worship songs have aided faith and worship in the generations of Christians. The 150 poems are mostly arranged in chronological order, from the Song of Moses and Miriam in 1446 B.C. to Owen Meredith's Genseric.
