Publisher's Synopsis

This volume recounts how, on 23rd September 1878, Robert Louis Stevenson set out from Le Monastier, 15 miles from Le Puy in the Haute Loire, to tramp through the wild region of the Cevennes. His only companion was a small donkey which, along with other basic necessities, was to carry a commodious "sleeping sack" of his own design.;In the course of the next 12 days, at a pace dictated by the lethargic donkey and carrying most of the supplies himself, Stevenson travelled some 120 miles: traversing rivers, mountains, valleys and forests; visiting remote villages and hamlets (some, by accident more than once); and sleeping on hillsides, in primitive auberges and - with misgivings - in a Trappist monastery. It was late in the season, and rain, wind and cold alternated with autumn sunshine and clear blue skies. The terrain was rough and demanding, the reaction of the locals uncertain.
