Our author indeed had n advantage of which few, or none of the most eminent of his predecessors could avail themselves and what Sir John Chardin laments the want of, in his preface to his travels, I mean a knowledge of the learned language of China, which is, as it were the key, not only to their particular opinions, but also to acquire a knowledge pf the composition of their mod: beautiful productions, which our author has abundantly demonstrated in his chapter on the origin of porcelain, wherein he gives a more minute detail of the matter and manner of preparing it, composition of the varnish, different species, manner of gilding, structure of the furnaces, the cafes in which it is baked, and in what the ancient differs from the modern, than, any author who has gone before him; and which he draws not only from his own observations, but from an accurate examination of what Chinese writers have said on that curious subject.
