This volume contains 13 of the 19 papers originally presented at the international conference 'Toward a New American Nation? Redefinitions and Reconstruction' held in Florence, Italy, between 24 and 26 March, 1994. The three-day conference dealt in succession with three main themes: crisis of economic growth and political systems; the frontiers of community and related processes of inclusion/exclusion; fragmentation and the making of national identity, plus a panel discussion on identity politics and the cultural market place.
