Publisher's Synopsis

The Rev Richard Wurmbrand is an evangelical minister who endured 14 years of Communist imprisonment and torture in his homeland, Romania. In 1945, when the Communists seized the country and attempted to control the churches for their purposes, Wurmbrand began an "underground" ministry to his enslaved people and the invading Soviet soldiers. He was eventually arrested in 1948, with his wife, who became a slave-labourer for three years. Richard Wurmbrand spent three years in solitary confinement, seeing no one but his Communist torturers. After three years he was transferred to a mass cell for a further five years, where the torture continued.;Due to his stature as a Christian leader, diplomats of foreign embassies asked the Communist government about his safety. They were told that he had fled Romania. Secret police, posing as released fellow-prisoners, told his wife of attending his burial in the prison cemetery, and his family at home and his friends abroad were told to forget him, as he was now dead.;Released after eight years, he promptly resumed his work with the "underground" Church, and two years later, in 1959, was re-arrested and sentenced to 25 years in prison. A general amnesty in 1964 saw him released again, and again he resumed his ministry. Fearing further persecution, Christians in Norway negotiated his departure from Romania, paying the Communist government a ransom of #2500, and he subsequently testified before the American Senate's Internal Security Subcommittee, showing the torture wounds on his body.;This is the story of his experiences.
