Publisher's Synopsis
The goal of this project was to develop design protocols that integrate uncertainty and water quality considerations into the design process of activated sludge treatment plants in a explicit and quantitative manner. The protocols are based on Monte Carlo simulation using distributions that represent the uncertainty and variability inherent to wastewater loads and model parameters. In the course of the research, outlier identification tools and statistical distributions for activated sludge model parameters were developed. The protocols were applied to an existing activated sludge treatment system to evaluate the effect of solids retention time on effluent ammonia in the context of a uncertain design environment and variable operating conditions. The protocols were also applied to ammonia toxicity in the receiving stream from the plant. The results of these statistical design procedures are an estimate of the probability of design failure as a function design decisions. ** Please note ** VAT is chargeable on this product at a rate of 17.5%, where applicable.
