For years now the Ramsays have spent every summer at their holiday home on the Isle of Skye. This year, they are accompanied by guests: as the adults paint, talk, muse and explore, young James Ramsay suggests an expedition to the nearby lighthouse. They expect these summers to go on forever; but, as the First World War looms, the integrity of family and society will be fatally challenged.
