The novel picks up where the second novel, In Chancery, left off, with the death of Soames Forsyte's second wife, Annette. Soames is now a lonely and bitter man, and his daughter Fleur is struggling with her own romantic troubles. Meanwhile, the younger generation of Forsytes, including Jon and Dinny, are trying to find their place in the world and navigate the changing social and political landscape of the time.
