Publisher's Synopsis

In the summer of 1988, disguised as a Chinese, Vanya Kewley travelled over 6000 kilometres throughout Tibet, for the most part hidden in a van driven by friendly Tibetans. She travelled without permits or permissions, in areas closed to foreigners which were constantly patrolled by the Chinese army. Discovery would have meant certain arrest; and the Tibetans who co-operated with her, and spoke to her of their experiences, faced certain imprisonment and torture.;Kewley was in Tibet to make the first documentary film to come out of the country for 40 years. She got within filming distance of an alleged Chinese nuclear base, and investigated at first hand reports of the torture and death of thousands of Tibetans in Chinese prisons, and of the systematic pillage of Tibet's natural resources. This is an account of her experiences, which provides a stirring investigation into the persecution of the Tibetan people.
