I shall ask you, therefore, to consider the nature of the moral life, not so much as an escape from sin, as an escape from bondage. Indeed sin, from this stand point, is itself a kind of bondage. They are attempts to achieve that which no creature but man has dreamed of, and which every fatalistic philosophy declares to be impossible.
