Publisher's Synopsis
There have been three major methods used to teach reading in the English
speaking world. First is The Alphabet Method. This method, while no
longer in use, was the classic method of teaching reading during the
beginning days of The United States of America. Second is The Phonics
Method. This is the method that replaced The Alphabet Method. It is what
became the modern basis for actually literacy. Third is The Whole Word
Method, which has been the continuing blight of children and causing poor
reading across the land of these United States. Each of these methods of
learning to read will be discussed in general detail of how they work, as well
as arguments for and against each of these methods.
