1867: Angus McKay, a tall handsome man, lives a hard life on the Scottish island of Arran with his wife Mary and their seven children. Isobel McCann a married heiress who lives on the island, is watching the virile man at work and approaches him with an offer of money to meet her in secret. Reluctantly he agrees. After a time, Angus finds his world is turning upside down.
An act of historic scullduggery finds the entire village being shipped to Glasgow, changing their lives forever. Angus believes his secret is the cause of a dark curse which has descended upon them. He is engulfed by despair living in a Glasgow slum while Mary struggles to keep their family together. Circumstances change radically as the years pass and eventually the long-kept secret is revealed.
