The importance of a detailed soil survey cannot be shown more strongly in figures than by presenting the acreage of land in the United States, and in each of the States, and the total acreage of land in farms, and improved lands in farms.

The total number of acres of land in the United States is representing the amount of land in farms is 878, acres, or the amount of improved land in farms is It will be seen that less than one-half of the total acreage of the United States is in farms, and slightly more than one-fourth of it is in improved farms.
