She was on a pedestal too high for him reach, an athlete and a swimmer, popular with the sporting elites. He was younger and into music rather than sports. 15 years later, he has the confidence but he also has a secret he's desperate to keep. Eve is now a deputy-head at a difficult school. She lives a solitary life and isn't looking for a husband. When she sees Richard again she recognises him but can't think why. He wasn't part of her circle of friends and yet he seems familiar.
