After the foregoing pages had passed through the press, there occurred on the morning of the 28th October, 1891, an earthquake second only--if second--to the great earthquake of 1855. Felt in Tokyo as a severe, unusually protracted, but not disastrous shock, it seems to have had its centre in the province of Mino, where the towns of Gifu and Ogaki were completely destroyed. At Osaka, at Otsu, at Fukui, at Toyama, and almost the whole way along the Tokaido-- especially at Nagoya--incalculable damage was done and thousands of lives were lost. CORRECTIONS.
