Le bourg de Meudon présentait, à la fin du dix huitième siècle, une physionomie à peu près semblable à celle qu'il montre aujourd'hui. Tout en haut de la colline, qui descend en pente roide jusqu'à la Seine, était assis le château entouré de ses terrasses monu mentales D'un côté, à gauche, en tournant vers le bois, les jardins glissaient jusqu'au village. De l'autre côté, à droite, s'étendait'un vaste parc attenant au pa lais, habité, jusqu'au 19 février 1791, par Mesdames de France, filles de Louis XV.
