Excerpt from The the Second and Third Epistles of John
The Muratorian canon, probably of the second century, quotes from the First Epistle of John and afterwards speaks of two epistles of John. The reference is probably to I. And II., though it may be to II. And III. Irenaeus, near the close of the second century, quotes II. 7, 8, and refers the passage to the first epistle. (adv. Haer., iii. 16, Again, he cites II. 10, 11 as the words of John, the disciple of the Lord. (id. I. 16, Clement, of Alexandria, about the same time, refers to the larger Epistle of John. (strom. Ii. Eusebius says of Clement that he has given in the Hypotyposes abridged accounts of all canonical Scripture, not omitting the disputed books. I refer to Jude and the other catholic epistles, and Barnabas, and the so-called apocalypse of Peter. (hist. Eccles, vi. This statement is confirmed, so far as the catholic epistles are concerned, by Photius of the ninth century (codex, and Cassiodorus, of the eighth century, says that Clement commented on I. And II. John.
