Publisher's Synopsis

This is a condensed summary and analysis of the classic book "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Gilman wrote the book in the late 1800's as a social protest against the "rest cure" (a common treatment for depression in those days) and the patronizing attitude towards women. The public did not understand "The Yellow Wallpaper" at first, treating it more as Gothic horror fiction than as a serious social statement. In time, the book did have its intended effect. Gilman, who had been endured three months of the rest cure herself, sent a copy of the book to her physician. As a result of "The Yellow Wallpaper," and to his credit, the doctor did alter the treatment prescribed for depression.
