The present volume contains selections from the miscel laneous writings of Dickens that first appeared in various publications - the Examiner, Household Words, All the Year Round, and others. Such selections are emi uently desirable alike as showing somewhat of the vast range of subjects treated by Dickens and as preserving those of his scattered writings that represent his best and most characteristic work. The reader will rightly judge that most of these tales, sketches, and articles of various sorts are not the products of immaturity, but the work of a great writer composed during the prime of his literary career. The best discrimination has been exercised in choosing from the great mass of his more or less occasional productions those that possess most of permanent literary value and of human interest.
