Publisher's Synopsis
The Winter Between takes place in a small town in California sometime in the early sixties. The time is early September. It is the story of a teenage boy, Jake, coming to grips with death, girls, bullies, and a spiritual questioning. When Jake's grandfather comes to live with him, the man is brought home in an ambulance and carried into the house on a gurney. He is in a coma and not expected to survive. Not only does the old man live, but he awakens from the coma to offer a new perspective on life Jake had never considered. Though Jake's relationship with his grandfather is at the heart of the story, Jake also has his first experience with girls, getting to know Bonnie as she tutors him in math. Then there is the bully who wants to pound his face into the dirt. All of this falling within the fall, winter, and early spring of his freshman year in high school.
