Publisher's Synopsis

The author of this study sets out from the viewpoint that much commentary on the work of Brian Moore is in essence condescending in its highlighting of his "genius as a storyteller", his versatility, his care and dedication as a craftsman. Instead, this study proproses a Moore whose purposes are essentially subversive and who, from his earliest work has been engaged in a covert parody of (and artistic games with) the doctrines and imagery of the Bible and Catholicism. These secret games are guilefully hidden behind overt and explicit criticism and stature. In a study that ranges selectively from the earliest to latest novels, the sexually and psychologically perverse elements in Moore's work are also analyzed and integrated into an overall view of this wily artist.
