Embon, born into a aristocratic family during the Japanese occupation of Korea, is thrown into jail for nationalistic activities. Released after coming down with tuberculosis, he decides to join his former classmates in Shanghai to work for the banned Korean Provisional Government. Although he is not yet fully recovered from his illness, he joins the fight and witnesses the violent deaths of his friends and other young Koreans during their pursuit of Korean independence from Japan.
