Publisher's Synopsis

John DeMille's style on the playing field (1930's) consisted of the spitball, later to be banned, and all the combinations he had worked on to stop a batter cold. He was known most for his curve ball. A great pitcher practices consistently to be the best he can be. Occasionally he'll reap a reward like a no hitter or a high strike out game. Many times, John on the field, when all was crucial, would take a small comb out of his pocket, swipe his hair back once, position his cap back and continue pitching. To some, such a gesture might seem overconfident, simply too laid back. A few declared, "It's outright cocky." However, his teammates, the supporters on the bleachers and those that knew him best, loved him all the more. Chip interrupted, lightening up a little, then declared, "I've spent more time at that city park than you ever have. Bout all I've ever run into is herds of kindergarten kids!" John chuckled before concluding his story: "Suddenly Chip, I was distracted from my thoughts. A very attractive young lady just ahead of me was in trouble. At first it appeared as if she was trying to get out of a hole she'd stepped in. Then I noticed a high heel had broken from her shoe. Whatever? I knew for sure something needed to happen quickly before she fell! I raced to her! Fastest I've ever moved! I swooped her up!" John continued on. "Kept her out of harms way, you know!" The timing of it all was not as startling as another discovery! "The lady fit better in my arms than anyone ever had!" Then she turned her face toward mine in a grateful manner and looked directly into my eyes... It was then that I knew, Chip, "The girl fit better still in my heart!"
