Quick boys! Said the mistress, your master is impatient; he has, doubtless, sweated his mare home from market, through the storm, and is anxious to have her stabled, to prevent her taking cold. Coming, master, coming 1 she exclaimed in hasty accents, for the farmer, though a kind husband, was by temper impatient, and the wife had fancied she heard his familiar rap upon the door, with his heavy gilt-headed cane - the invariable warning, on a market night, either that Alick Wildman was a little excited by liquor (he seldom got tipsy), or that his favourite mare was covered with sweat and foam, as a consequence of a trotting match homeward, with the rival nag of some near neighbour.
