Life seems to be going well for the Two Jays, and Dingbat has settled well into his new home. Jem is baffled by his father's distressed reaction when Jem suggests that Jeminee's deceased father, Greg, looks a lot like him. Jem has done something wrong but doesn't know what. Mr Whibbleberry invites applications for sumptuous recipes to go into Sandy Hooskin's Beachwizard and Deliciousnesses Recipe Book, and then announces an exciting competition for money and space saving ideas put on by the head of Maiden Air, Mr Dick Pickle. The prize for the winner from all the children in Very-Much-Farther-Afield will be a trip to space for two in Mr Dick Pickle's new rocket Fair Maiden. Excitement spreads through the school as the kids begin to develop their ideas and plan their submissions - except for one child, John Smith who is terrified of the next class - JOM: the Joy of Movement in the Jomnasium where he will have to undress and expose inexplicable bruises and sores on his body. He is terrified. What has been happening to John? Only Jem can find out, but it ends in disaster. What is going on?
