The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 began on May 31 and ended on June 1, 1921. Though estimates vary, historians believe that around 300 people were killed, most of them African Americans. The riot was sparked by the arrest of Dick Rowland, an African American man who was accused of assault on Sarah Page, a white elevator operator in Tulsa's Drexel Building. At least 8,000 troops were called in to quell the riot, and a total of 10,000 black people were left homeless after their homes were burnt down by white rioters who were predominantly from outside the city of Tulsa.
