Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Things That Count

Probably her appearance had something to do with her success. Her face was full of good humour and fun, which showed themselves in the laugh in her light-brown eyes, just match ing her curly hair, and in the suggestion of a dimple in her left cheek. She looked adorably pretty in the graceful attitude which a guitar exacts, with her knees crossed, showing her slim feet in brown satin slippers. Her gown was of deep cream-coloured mull, covered closely with a faint brown pattern of interlock ing arabesques.

It was late before she was released and the guests took leave of their hostess.

It was certainly a great success, Mrs. Perkins remarked with visible pride to the two young women who had helped her entertain them, Dolly Van Horn, her secretary, and Evelyn Smith, the girl of the guitar, her guest.
