In the style of classical Journalism, these are Miller's letters, at once personal and public, written in the aftermath of the disasters of September 11th 2001, but also in the aftermath of two centuries of disasters, mostly public, some private. History and psychoanalysis are interleaved and read against each other, and it is a history (and an analysis) that is at once personal and already-familiar. "When it's a matter of psychoanalysis, of what the analysand says, of what the analyst says, the question is posed: is it true, this lovely lie? Who's to know! This defect is structural. It is the lack of truth on truth, as Lacan nicely put it. This lack is everywhere in language; it is stripped naked in psychoanalysis."
