The Practical Values of Arithmetic. - The utilitarian value of arithmetic has long served to explain its traditional place in the elementary school curriculum. The mere routine activities of daily life demand a mastery of certain number facts and number processes. In addition, a care fully selected curriculum in arithmetic helps to give children an insight into social activities that would otherwise be unknown to them. It is necessary that children understand the meaning of averages and the modes of computing them; that they know the meaning of common mathematical symbols, of percentages of increases and decreases, of rates of taxation, of interest, of insurance - in a word, the common business practices of social life.
