After a tempestuous struggle, the visitor tossed the pillow aside. Life had ceased. The killer turned Vera over on her face and ripped the satin jacket of her pyjamas. Upon her back was a tattooed name - "MARY". Dispassionately, the intruder wrote the name down, returned to the window and disappeared. "Mary", "Ian", "Lil". Three rather ordinary names. But when they are each found tattooed on the backs of three murder victims, they are steppingstones on a murder trail that baffles Scotland Yard.
