Publisher's Synopsis

In October 1995, the Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research (CILT) in conjunction with the "Times Educational Supplement" (TES), conducted a survey of the provision of modern languages in secondary schools in the UK.;The main aim of the survey was to provide information on the provision of languages other than French in the early years of secondary school and on factors affecting diversification. The survey shows that diversification of first foreign language has increased since the introduction intitiatives which encouraged schools to diversify in the late-1980s. Approximately one quarter of pupils now learn a language other than French. The position of German in particular has been strengthened. At the same time there has been an increase in numbers of pupils learning a foreign language in primary schools where there is an overwhelming predominance in French.
