Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Spell of China
I like to read books of travel, an old lady remarked to me, as she held a copy of The Spell of the Holy Land in her hand. I can read them and imagine that I am visiting the countries written about. But there is one fault that I have to find with all of them; they tell you about the trip from New York to Jerusalem, Zanzibar or Patagonia, but they never tell how much the trip costs. Why, I was thirty years old before I knew that it was possible to spend the summer in Europe without a small for tune.
