Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Spectral Absorption of Certain Monoazo Dyes: I. The Effect of Position Isomerism on the Spectral Absorption of Methyl Derivatives of Benzeneazophenol

Hydrochloric acid may behave not only as a solvent, but as a reagent. Addition compounds of this acid with some of the dyes discussed in this paper have been isolated, and it is probable that similar compounds may exist in the solutions measured. No attempt has been made to study the formation of such compounds, but a comparison of the spectral absorption of the hydrochloric acid solu tions with that of the corresponding alcohol solutions indicates that the effect of the acid is not merely one of a solution, but is chemical in nature, and is not directly associated with the hydroxyl group.
