Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Spectator, Vol. 7

To attend without impatience an account offive barred gates, double ditches, and precipices, and to furvey the orator with defiring eyes, is to me ex tremely difficult, but ahfolutely neceffiry, to be upon tolerable terms with him; but then the occafional hurtling outinto laughter, is of all other accomplic ments the molt requifite. Lconfel's at prefent I have not that command ofthefe convulfions, as is necef fary to be good company; therefore I beg youwoulcl' publifh this letter, and let me be known all at once for a queer fellow, and avoided. It is monfirous to me, that we who are given to reading and_calm con: verfation ihould ever be vifited by thefe roarers: but they think they themfelves, as neighbours, may come into our rooms with the fame right, that they and their dogs hunt in our grounds.
