When penniless Londoner Christopher lands a job in tourism as a tour manager, with zero qualifications, he quickly realises he has bitten off more than he can chew. Leading a coach tour of 25 people he's never met - including a team of American football players - to where? You mean Ruritania actually exists?
But things start to look up when he meets the local tour guide - the beautiful Rose. He tries desperately hard not to, but damn, he falls in love, which makes things complicated.
Alarmingly, he discovers that Rose is engaged - against her will - to the playboy son of a dangerous local oligarch. Incredibly, it also turns out that she's the distant heir to Ruritania's long-lost throne, an institution that the Ruritanian government seems hell-bent on restoring.
What's a boy to do? A beautiful princess? A vacant throne? But the throne is the last thing she wants, along with the oligarch's son - but she's trapped. While Christopher desperately tries to prevent their wedding taking place, the Ruritanians get it into their heads that he is out to claim the crown for himself. And there's one person above all who cannot let that happen - the oligarch's terrorising teenage daughter.
Can Christopher save Rose from her tragic destiny - and a future sister-in-law from hell - before it's too late for both of them?
