I am deeply indebted to my mentors at University Col lege, London, Sir John Neale, and his present successor as Astor Professor of History, Mr. ]oel Hurstfleld for their in, valuable guidance in Elizabethan research. I am also grateful to the late Canon Edwin Henson, Rector of St. Alban's in Valladolid, who graciously provided access to that college's archive. Don Ricardo Magdaleno and his Skilled Staff at Simancas were most kind in guiding my investigation in that great depository of Spanish Hapsburg documents. At Stonyf hurst College, the Librarian, Fr.
