Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a prominent German author, poet, and statesman. Goethe's poetry novels, and plays all are considered some of the finest in literature and his popularity has not waned since his death in 1832. The Sorrows of Young Werther is an epistolary novel that is also considered semi-autobiographical. The novel is told in a series of letters written by a young, sensitive artist to his friend Wilhelm. The book was highly influential in the later Romantic movement in literature.
