Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Sons of the Border: Sketches of the Life People of the Far Frontier

J ornada del Muerto, the most graceful and forcible of all his stories, we think. With this, general attention was attracted, and our young friend's writings soon became the special feature of the Kansas, and the favorite selections of the newspapers all over the country, although prepared from first to last only in the intervals of occasional release from ordinary business thoughts and labors. There could scarcely be a greater mistake than to suppose that these papers were written as a business, or that the time employed in their production was a continuous year. Many of them were written in our presence and sent to the composing-room piecemeal, in appeasement of the traditional imp's cry for copy, without an attempt at a revision. That they have faults, we are prepared to admit; but that their excellences make full amends for all shortcom ings, few will venture to deny.
