But when Dvalon and the assistant mysteriously vanish overnight, Helannon increasingly finds himself out of control and out of his depth. Meanwhile, Phera Main, Lord General of the army and hero to the nation has fought and lost her final battle. Terribly wounded and traumatically disfigured, she is exiled to an unfamiliar life of seclusion on a farmstead in the great plain. Surrounded by her constant companion, Kera and a cacophony of orphan children, she resigns herself to her fate. However, when ancient forces collide with tragic consequences, Phera Main finds herself at the centre of a struggle not only for her own existence and that of those she cares for but for the very survival of mankind itself. Her final battle was only the beginning. Now she must look into the abyss that confronts her and face the demons that have tormented her from the moment of her birth.
