Set during the Wars of Scottish independence, the Silver Thistle brooch belonged to Thomas Crauford's father. It was hard earned then cruelly taken away. Thomas wants it back and he wants to find the man who betrayed his father. He becomes a soldier and a diplomat. His struggle to recover the silver thistle follows a trail that leads him through Scotland, England, France, Flanders, Rome, and the Hanseatic cities of medieval Germany. It is the same trail that the Scottish leadership must follow if they are to free themselves from English rule.
