Pat Peoples' theory is that his life is a movie produced by God. His mission in life is to become physically fit and emotionally literate, whereupon God will ensure the movie is a romcom, complete with happy ending - meaning for Pat, the return of his estranged wife Nikki. After several years in a mental-health facility, Pat leaves hospital to find that no one will talk about Nikki; his friends now have families; his football team keeps losing and now his therapist recommends adultery.
