This mystery is set in the late 1880s and involves aspects of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a stolen treasure, and a secret pact amongst four convicts. This novel is also where we see, for the first time, that Holmes is a drug addict when he isn't solving crimes and sobers up while working.
