Betty Barnes has been largely brought up by her older sister, Kate, in a small West Country village. Betty's daydreams of the bright lights of Hollywood and becoming a movie star are one way for her to escape the realities of school life where she is cruelly bullied. Betty has inherited psychic gifts from her forebears and she experiences memories of an earlier time when she was the local Wise Woman, guardian of a nearby mystical cave. In desperation she runs away, but 1930s London is hardly a hospitable place...and she cannot turn her back on her magic forever.
