Publisher's Synopsis
Mary Lennox is alone in the world when she arrives at Misselthwaite Manor, her uncle Mr Craven's enormous, drafty mansion looming on the edge of the Yorkshire moors. Both parents have died in India and there is no-one else to look after her. Cross and lonely, she explores the gardens, where she is led by a robin to discover the door to the lost "Secret Garden". Inside, she thinks all is dead, but soon she sees signs of new life. With Dickon, brother to her maid Martha, she begins to work in the garden, nursing it back to health. As she does so, her own health and temper begin to improve, so much so that when she comes across her cousin Colin, a tyrannical invalid since infancy, she believes that he too can be helped by the garden. Summer sees the complete regeneration of both Mary and Colin, and by the time Craven returns to Misselthwaite in autumn, the children are harvesting the fruits of their labour - health and happiness.
