Agatha Christie's second novel The Secret Adversary introduces childhood friends Tommy Beresford and Prudence "Tuppence" Cowley. The novel begin in the Prologue, where a man hands important documents to an American woman, as she is more likely to survive the sinking RMS Lusitania in May 1915. Fast forward to 1919 London, where soldier Tommy Beresford meets war Tuppence. They agree to start their own business, The Young Adventurers, and are hired for a job that leads them into dangerous situations. A man follows Tuppence to offer her work. She uses the alias "Jane Finn". He gives her £50 and then disappears. They advertise for information regarding Jane Finn, leading to two replies, one from a British intelligence leader from his war service.
