This report summarizes the findings by HMI of visits to nine university departments of education made to assess how well secondary student teachers were being prepared to teach the National Curriculum, with a particular emphasis on those subjects for which PGCE is the main route into a teaching career. Of the 48 subject courses seen, 16 were rated good and all but three of the remainder satisfactory. Most students seen in school were teaching satisfactorily relative to their stage of training.
