Publisher's Synopsis

The Sacred Dramas of Esther and Athalia is a book written by the French playwright Jean Racine in 1803. The book contains two plays, both of which are based on biblical stories. The first play, Esther, tells the story of a Jewish queen who risks her life to save her people from a plot to exterminate them. The second play, Athalia, tells the story of a queen who attempts to kill all of the heirs to the throne of Judah, but is eventually defeated by a young prince. Both plays are written in the style of classical tragedy, with a focus on the characters' inner struggles and the conflicts between their personal desires and their duties to their people and their gods. The Sacred Dramas of Esther and Athalia is considered to be one of Racine's most important works, and is still widely read and performed today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
